The magnitude of the atmospheric pressure decreases with the altitude because the density of the atmosphere decreases. Therefore the highest atmospheric pressure can be experienced on the earth’s surface.

The following figure shows the global anomaly of mean air pressure variation in November 2020.

Credit: https://bit.ly/3g07TlM

How does a Variation in Atmospheric Pressure Causes a Cyclone?

Cyclones originate in places where atmospheric pressure is low over a large water body when the temperature of the water rises over 26.5°C, but how? Generally, a water body large enough for such a scenario can be found in oceans. When the atmospheric pressure gets comparatively low over a certain area of an ocean, the warm air near the water’s surface (due to the high temperature of the water) rises to fill the gaps and cold air goes down because it contains moisture (comparatively heavy particles).

The warm air reaches a place where they get even warmer and keeps rising up, which creates more and more gaps in the atmosphere. To fill these gaps, surrounding air rushes in. These air particles which come to fill the gaps travel from longer distances at greater speeds. When these air particles reach the area with low air pressure, instead of filling the gaps they start rotating creating a spiral. After that, any air that travels to fill the gaps has to join this spiral because those particles cannot pass the already established spiral directly.

This spiral of air eventually grows into a cyclone with a very high diameter, where a large amount of air rushes in to fill the gaps in the atmosphere. In general, a tropical cyclone has a diameter from 100km – 2000km and it can grow up to a height of 10km, where the surrounding clouds start to rotate around it creating a thunderstorm. Also, tropical cyclones can last between 3 – 7 days depending on their speed, the distance to land, and their diameter.

Death of a Cyclone

Cyclones usually die when they cross a land area. The reason for this is that when a cyclone crosses a land surface or a cold water body, the main source of the cyclone, which is warm water has taken away and because of that the cyclone dies.

So I would like to leave two questions for you to answer at the end of this article.

Why cyclones usually don’t occur in the Arctic Ocean?

How Global Warming can increase the frequency of the occurrence of cyclones.

Don’t forget to send what you think about that via Twitter or as a comment below.
